Were these stores closed for remodeling, or were they remodeling while open? 5343 N. Broadway is Jewel in my old neighborhood but I didn’t realize it was closed. I will have to check out the changes!

If anything, while rearranging everything, they took the time to wipe the shelves down (that probably haven’t been for 25 years. I’ll hand them that. They probably spent more on the Grand Opening signs dangling everyehere than the “remodeling” itself. I’ll confess, I stopped in tonight after work. They moved the ground turkey – AGAIN! I’m starting to wonder if this is some marketing or psychological study/joke. In either case, unless my car is repossessed or everything there is free – never again. My promise to you Jewel.

Reasons to shop at Jewell: You like getting harassed by other patrons, you like limp produce, you eat only junk food.
edgewater Produce has long been better for fresher produce at lower cost as well as a small variety of other foods. We’ve transformed our shopping so that we make a few trips to Mariano’s on Lawrence for bulk items, but buy fresh produce daily at Edgewater Produce. Easier? No, but better in the long run.

Totally agree. They’ve done the impossible! Made a really bad store much worse. Now we can’t find anything, the lines are much longer because they’ve eliminated the self-serve option (“too much theft” one clerk told me was the reason, and cut back on the staff. So better to inconvenience the paying customers instead of hiring staff to monitor the self-service lanes. I really hate this store, and will buy my produce across the street at Edgewater Market, which has much better produce and lower prices. Jewel is a disaster! Tear it down and build a Mariano’s.

I would hardly call the 5516 N. Clark store “remodeled”. To boot, they’ve done away with the self-checkout lanes and they will not be returning. At 10:30pm there is ONE lane open with at least 8 people in line. I asked the cashier herself regarding the self-checkout lanes and if they’d be adding more cashiers at night, assuming this disaster was temporary during the “remodeling”. Her response was “No, there is only one of us scheduled at night” (one clocked out and left during our conversation).

Although I live within walking distance of this store, I am officially done with it. They are frequently out of staple items such as rice (yes, RICE). I’ll jump in my car and go elsewhere. How green.

That building has served it’s useful life moons ago and needs to be torn down. I’d rather see a parking garage there.

The 5343 Broadway store has always been an unpleasant experience. In a neighborhood where many bike, they have only one short rack that is inconvenient to access. Compare that to the many racks at Mariano’s on Sheridan. Jewel has a small variety of many items, in favor of junk food and junk drinks. Jewel also does not have small brochures listing the location of items like Mariano’s.
In a word, it has been a very “unpleasant” experience shopping at the Jewel Broadway store and continues to be. (I was there yesterday, a day before their “reopening.”
