Incidents of Edgewater Foyer Package Thefts On the Rise

foyerThefts_300x230.1I was surprised last December when I found out a package had been delivered to my condo building on Winthrop was missing. After consulting with neighbors, I expected the worst because the problem happened to me before this past summer. I got a call from a gentlemen who said my business cards were scattered all over the corner of Berwyn/Kenmore. I walked over and found someone had stole my package from the foyer, ripped open the package and threw them all over the sidewalk. I assume the perpetrator didn’t have use for my cards.

So I am learning now that there are several incidents happening all over Winthrop Avenue, and assuming elsewhere. According to DNA, a women on the 5800 block of Winthrop has given to police videotape of someone entering their foyer illegally and stealing packages. These thefts seem to be calculated as the person(s) know when the packages are arriving.

Now a police spokesperson has announced that Latesha Bender, 35 of the 7600 block of Sheridan was arrested January 27th for illegally forcing her way into a building at the 5400 block of Winthrop and stealing several packages.

Take the time to talk with your neighbors about a plan to put packages in a safer area of the building, out of sight from the sidewalk. Also, make sure the door locks are working correctly and guarded from attempted break-ins.
