After a year of construction, Heartland Healthcare has finally opened the doors to its new home at 1300 West Devon on Monday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Funded by a $3 million competitive State of IL grant process meant to place new resources in Illinois’ most medically neglected communities. The 9,000 sq. ft. center opened with many politicians on-hand including U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) and State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago).

Heartland Health Centers currently have ten locations serving nearly 21,000 patients. Their mission is quite clear:  to improve the well-being of the communities they serve by providing accessible, high-quality healthcare. The centers provide primary, oral and mental healthcare to both insured and uninsured patients. They are known for their inclusive environment that offers everything from interpretation services in over 35 languages to health education and support.

The new Devon facility is planning on serving 5,000 clients, most of whom are low-income, uninsured and underinsured residents. It is designed to be a spacious and sunlit space with an atrium, twelve examination rooms and a community room for wellness events for patients and the community. The new facility will offer many services such as management of chronic illnesses, school/sports physicals, women’s health services, dental screenings, immunizations and health education to name just a few.

The building itself is completely state of the art including solar panels on the roof and pipes descending 500 feet below the center to access geothermal heat. The site was designed to be the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum health center in Illinois, the highest LEED certification.
