Gunshots, Strong Currents and Theft Further Stress Summer Safety

BeachIt was only a little over a week ago that Alderman Harry Osterman stressed summer safety at the State of Edgewater event. He reminded everyone that the usual increased summer crime rate is just one of the issues we face every year as the temperatures rise. People flock to our lakefront to cool off and enjoy some leisure time, but the alderman stresses that we all need be aware of our surroundings and make safety a priority

The beautiful weather we saw yesterday, unfortunately brought some of those problems. Yesterday the lake currents were strong and many swimmers and  kayakers found themselves in adverse conditions. At 2:37pm yesterday two people were rescued from the water around Hollywood beach. The fire department  dispatched a scuba team, fast boat rescue, and rescue helicopter among ambulances. One person was treated in the ambulance and was (unconfirmed) taken to the hospital.

The entire day Kayakers were finding themselves in trouble. Fire boats were regularly helping those who found themselves overwhelmed. In particular, at 7:32pm yesterday at foster beach, a kayak overturned tossing two people into the water. Again, the fire department  dispatched a scuba team, fast boat rescue, and rescue helicopter. There were no reports of injuries.

Around 1:30am this Sunday morning, we received many Facebook messages of gunshots in an alley way around Thorndale and Kenmore. All said they heard around 5-8 consecutive sharp pops. It is unclear if they were actually gunshots seeing this is the time of year when fireworks go off regularly. There has been no reports of injuries. See our story about how to distinguish between the two. EVB will continue to monitor the story.

Lastly, it was reported that around 6:45am Saturday morning, a woman was sitting at a light at Ridge and Glenwood when a man who was standing at the corner smashed her passenger window and stole her purse then ran. The man was described as Black male approximately 5ft 8in, med-dark complexion, possibly a curly Afro, dark jeans and a turquoise top/hoodie/jacket.

Thank you to all who continue to bring these incidents to our attention. Please remember to take precautions in order to have a safe summer.
