Eyewitness account of purse snatching on Winthrop

At last night’s Edgewater Beach Neighbors Association meeting, local police told us about a suspect who grabbed a woman’s purse on Winthrop Ave. at Thorndale. He was subsequently apprehended and charged with felony robbery. A reader also emailed me to provide the following firsthand account of the incident. It really pays to be observant!

The guy grabbed someone’s purse down by Swift Elementary (which we didn’t see), ran north on Winthrop on the East side of the street where I was standing with my wife, he said “excuse me sir,” turned right, and headed South in the Winthrop/Kenmore alley. At that point we realized he had stolen the purse, and we gave chase. I called 911 as we rolled, my wife continued the pursuit on foot and was joined by another guy who followed him as he entered a building at Kenmore and Ardmore. After about 5-10 minutes about 50 cops showed up and arrested the guy. I don’t know whether the victim was hurt, but they recovered her purse and the missing money.
