Egdewater High Rise Fire kills Elderly Woman

AB20232An 81-year-old woman was badly injured with burns after a fire in Edgewater Beach started in her high rise apartment.

The blaze broke out early this morning around 8:45 a.m. at 5333 N. Sheridan Rd. The 34 story building houses The Breakers, a senior citizen living complex.

The building’s sprinkler system quickly pick out the blaze which was contained to the one unit on the 26th floor. Smoke was also contained and did not spread to additional floors.

The woman was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital where she remains in critical condition. The fire is under investigation.

**UPDATE**

The victim of the fire was transferred from Weiss Memorial Hospital to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m., according to fire officials and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Her name was released as Ann Turner. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
