I passed the shop earlier this week and was very surprised and saddened to see that it was closed. I was able to get good food for my kitties at good prices.

The chains aren’t what killed Parkview. It was last winter. It was so cold that people turned to online ordering for their food. And the business didn’t come back. Don’t blame the chains, or the Internet, it is just people trying to save money and effort. There are no villains here. We always supported Joe and Parkview. I hope he does well in his next endeavor.

I’m shocked and horrified. This was the best pet store around. My family shopped there all the time. I haven’t been there in little while so I didn’t know they were closing.They always took great care of us. The chains are making me nervous too. We have a whole new strip mall by Foster, across from the Berwyn mall. Our Alderman seems to be for local businesses but maybe needs to be pushed a little. And perhaps he thinks Broadway is suitable for chains. Local business and general diversity are the 2 biggest strengths (besides the lakefront!) of our community. If we just rely on market forces, we will lose both of them. As a city we could do so much more to invest in and promote local business and financial diversity of housing options, instead of our current corporatization and privatization priorities. Le’s just stop worshipping the market folks, and get creative with expectations from our our public officials! Even Clark St. has creeping chains.!

Bummer. This place was a great complement to Jameson, where I shop for most pet goods. They seriously had the best selection of toys from any pet retail store I’ve been to – goofy stuff you don’t see everywhere like way-too-big stuffed animals, interactive puzzles and things that make interesting noises (my dog found regular ole squeakers boring). They also carried stainless bowls and elevated feeding stations, which Jameson doesn’t have (odd since so many people use these). That said, I rarely went because I just didn’t find the owner very personable. He was never rude,he just wasn’t interested in small talk and wouldn’t really engage when I’d try – and that’s the kind of thing that will make me come back. Well, another one bites the dust I guess.

I believe Urbanimal was bought out, it’s now a Bentley’s Corner Barkery, which appears to be a local chain.
