Edgewater Turns The Typical Garage Sale Into Something Awesome

epicNo matter what the thermometer may say, it is spring in EdgeVille with an eye toward summer. This means warm days, farmers markets, festivals and, as it has been for the past 20 years, the Edgewater Neighborhood Garage Sale set to take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, on Saturday, June 6.

There is something for everyone at this sale, which will take place from Broadway east to Sheridan, Foster to Granville, and west of Broadway to Clark from Ridge to Devon. Shoppers can enjoy sellers from 200 households and group venues. The Edgewater Chamber of Commerce has invited various merchants along the route to offer sidewalk sales, and restaurants and sidewalk cafes will be invited to offer stop and shop specials during the day-long sale. Chicago Friends School at 5944 N. Magnolia, a first-time participant this year, will offer a petting zoo for the kids from 1 to 3 p.m.

Lynn Pierce has been the coordinator of the sale for the past 20 years. “It started with just one block club,” she said, “and now there are seven plus the Edgewater Beach Apartments. I’ve even gotten calls from some of the high rises along Sheridan Road. It just gets bigger and better every year.”

To accommodate sellers such as those living in multi-unit buildings, Pierce said, four group sites have been arranged. These are Church of the Atonement at 5749 N. Kenmore, Swift School at 5900 N. Winthrop, the parking lot at 6044 N. Winthrop and the parking lot of Barr Funeral Home at 1228 W. Granville.

Not for profit organizations will also be represented. These include St. Gertrude Church at 6214 N. Glenwood with their proceeds going toward Walk on Water, the parish’s youth group, Care for Real at 1258 W. Elmdale and the Chicago Police Department at 1242 W. Elmdale. First-time participants include Immanuel Lutheran Church and Families Together Cooperative Nursery School at 1500 W. Elmdale, Chicago Friends School at 5944 N. Magnolia and Berger Park Advisory Council at 6205 N. Sheridan.

Registration for sellers is $15; there is no cost for not-for-profit organizations to register. Registration will continue until May 31.

“Maps with addresses of all participants will be distributed by sellers the day of the sale,” Pierce said. “For the first time this year, addresses also will be available online in a Google push-pin map at tinyurl.com/Edgewater-Sale-2015.” Shoppers can get this information on a smart phone.

To register or for more information, contact Marilyn (Lynn) Pierce at Mjpier7133@att.net or 773-271-2909. She will direct you to the closest coordinator for the area in which you live.

So come out, join the fun, find some treasures and get to know your neighborhood and neighbors!
