Edgewater Medical Demolition To Start This Week, Rats Could Be A Nuisance

rats-1Alderman Patrick O’Connor announced in an email that the first building at the old Edgewater Medical Center site will start coming down this week.

The demolition company handling the job is Groundcrew, and they have started moving equipment in place. The first building demolished is at 1619 W. Edgewater and will take approximately a month.

“The building at 1619 W. Edgewater passed its air control test and is now clean.  They are now working in 1621-1625,” the developer MCZ told the Alderman in an email.  “Edgewater and those buildings are being prepped and effected areas taped off.  According to DDS Environmental, someone called the City about the remediation and they came out to inspect the work and they allowed us to continue.”

However with most long vacant buildings, rats and other pests have had time to build nests in the structures. The demolition will most likely bring the critters out and into the neighborhood.

MCZ assured the Alderman that they are ‘continuing a program of rat extermination that began in October.’ They also added that the pest elimination will continue throughout the demolitions and redevelopment of the buildings on Ashland.

“We will be asking CDOT, possibly as soon as next week, for a right of way permit to block off the sidewalk to the street.  The height of the 1625 W. Edgewater building makes it more difficult to demolish and we want as much room as possible should something not go to plan,” MCZ continued.  “Also, we will also be looking for permission to trim the tree branches from the trees in the parkway that might interfere with the demolition equipment.”

The Alderman warned in a previous statement that there will most likely be ‘disruptions’ to the neighborhood and they encourage residents to contact their office with any concerns.
