The former owner of the now-shuttered Edgewater Medical Center will remain in custody pending separate criminal trials tied to the hospital’s collapse amid a massive health care fraud scheme, a federal judge ruled on July 1.

Peter Rogan poses a significant flight risk, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly decided, agreeing with federal prosecutors. Rogan had fled to Vancouver, Canada, in 2006 but decided to stop fighting extradition in June.

Rogan is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice stemming from the medical center’s collapse. He is also charged with criminal contempt on allegations that he concealed his assets, lied to the court and violated court orders to turn over documents to the hospital’s primary creditor. The hospital was forced into bankruptcy in 2002.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
