United States military personnel puts itself in difficult, dangerous situations every day. Now, the Edgewater Dental Group seeks to give back through a program called Operation Shoebox.

“By donating the candies to the troops, we can show them our appreciation,” Dr. Szilard Hermann said. “Last year, (I) received some handwritten notes from troops stationed overseas. That definitely felt good.”

Military mother Mary Harper founded Operation Shoebox in 2003, according to the organization’s website. The central Florida mother learned from her five children and two sons-in-law who were deployed around the world that troops didn’t receive many care packages or mail. She rolled up her sleeves and started an informal care package project out of her living room, Operation Shoebox said.

Hermann said this is his dental group’s second year participating in the Operation Shoebox program and that he hopes to make participation in the program a new tradition. Children who donate at least 15 pieces of candy to the Edgewater Dental Group’s office on or before Nov. 16 will receive a toy and will be eligible for a drawing for four free raffle tickets to watch a movie with their family.

“We’ve thought that it would be a good idea to give something for everybody,” Hermann added. “The family might go to the movie (and) have a discussion about healthy diet instead of eating candy.”

It’s not just about sending candy to the military. Everyone who participates in the program can send letters or other items to the troops, as well. He said he hopes it reminds the troops that people are thinking about them and that his Edgewater Dental Group patients are thankful for the military’s hard work.

“The kids here will eat less candy and hopefully (will) have some good time with the family at a movie,” Hermann said, adding that his office also plans to send the troops floss and toothbrushes.

A Boston University graduate, Hermann performs implants and laser and oral surgery. Fellow dentist Dr. Olna Szekely, who also graduated from Boston University, focuses on smile makeover, braces, invisalign, veneers and other esthetic procedures.

The Edgewater Dental Group is located at 6260 N. Broadway Ave. For more information, visit www.edgewaterdentistchicago.com.
