Edgewater Celebrates Gay Marriage

gay marriageIt has been a long long road for equality on many levels in the world. Here in the USA, our latest struggle for equal rights has centered around the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered) movement. At the forefront of this fight is marriage equality. The momentum in favor of equal marriage rights has shifted dramatically since 1995 when DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) was passed.

One by one, states have decided to overturn state marriage bans by legislation, judicial rulings and popular vote. To date 19 states and the District of Columbia have given Gay and Lesbian couples the opportunity to marry legally. One of those states is Illinois. Legislation that passed in the Illinois House in November, 2013, will enable Gay and Lesbian people to finally tie the knot on Sunday June 1, 2014. Not only a victory for them, it is a victory for their children, extended families and the betterment of our society.

Here in Edgewater, the vibrant LGBT community will celebrate along side our straight friends and family tomorrow. Among many of the festivities, we are highlighting two popular ones right here in our community.
