Drowning At Foster Beach Sunday, Life Guards Off Duty Starting Today

lifeguards2A 49-year-old Chicago man went into the water around the 5200 block of Simonds Drive near Foster Beach. The person swam about 25 feet from shore when witnesses saw him in distress. They called 911 but the man disappeared from sight.  When emergency vehicles got to the beach around 8:30 a.m. they were able to locate and bring him to shore but unfortunately he was pronounced dead at Weiss Memorial Hospital at 9:03 a.m. His name has not yet been released.

As of today, with the return of Chicago area children to school, lifeguards at all Chicago area beaches are officially off duty until May 22, 2015. It has been a great summer with few incidents, but the Chicago Park District wants you to still be extra careful on Chicago beaches. Swimming on the lakefront is now technically illegal and could result in up to a $500 fine (though this is rarely enforced).

Some beach activities will still be open to the public such as volleyball leagues. Beaches will be open regular hours, but swimming will be again, not permitted. Lifeguards will remain on duty at Chicago’s various indoor swimming pools which are open year round.
