Dog Killed, Others Injured After SUV Fires Shots And Swerves Into Park

Thursday, January 22, 2015
By Daniel Zagotta

police lightsA dog was killed and as many as three others injured on Wednesday evening in the park often know as “the meadows” at the 5400 block of N. Sheridan.

A white SUV, possibly a Jeep, swerved into the large grassy area off Lake Shore Drive around 5:30 p.m. after firing several shots into the air. The vehicle veered into the bike path towards a person walking their dog. That dog was struck and killed. The SUV then proceeded North through the park and struck up to three other dogs before exiting onto Bryn Mawr Ave.

Edgewater is one of the most dog friendly neighborhoods in Chicago and the normally quiet “meadows” is a popular place to take pooches for a stroll.  No people where injured in the incident an it is unclear if the driver was targeting the dogs specifically.

According to CBS Chicago, the Park Tower Condo Association has a surveillance camera that captured the incident. That tape will go to police in order to find the driver.

Alderman Harry Osterman, a fellow dog owner, was saddened by the event as he spoke with EVB briefly today. He told us, “Police are actively investigating this incident. If any one has information on the event, please call area police or the alderman’s office.”

You can also email us at EVB or post below with any details you may have. We will follow updates on this incident.

How is this not a bigger story?? The facts remain: people were with their dogs. Shots were fired. Then, said people and their dogs have a 2+ ton vehicle aim at them, accelerate and some animals were run-over/killed. Besides animal cruelty, isn’t this attempted murder??? And, wouldn’t better news coverage encourage a greater police presence, not to mention maybe some tips?

I completely agree. This is insane – shots were fired and pedestrians could have been killed.

Some maniac drives through a park during a prime use time and the mayor?… I think I hear crickets. I guess gunshots and dead pets and endangered citizens in a city park aren’t a big deal. Good to know.

An SUV drives into the park, shoots a gun in the air, kills a dog hits three other dogs then drives back on the street and leaves but no picture or license number or anything??!?

  • EdgewaterDad

No. Not on NBC morning news. I guess where to find 12 copies of “Charlie Hebdo”
in Chicago area took priority over this news.

Why was this not broadcast? If it was an unarmed gangbanger hit by a policeman for a crime in progress- then it would have been all over the news. I am so sorry for the dog’s owners.

I saw this on WGN-TV at 9:00 pm. The fact that it happened after the other networks’ evening newscasts were already underway may be the reason they didn’t cover it. “Car hits dog” isn’t really newsworthy; 11 shots fired from a speeding car on the pedestrian path is. I hope the surveillance cameras can provide some clues.

“Incidents” like this one are exactly the reason my partner and I got the hell out of Edgewater Beach. It’s rapidly gone downhill in the past few years, and no one seems to even want to admit there’s a problem.

You have 20-30 people shot in some neighborhoods on the south side every weekend and Emanuel just tells everyone how much safer and better its getting. No way he would comment on this. Hopefully with the next election the people of Chicago send him a strong message and vote him out.
