Chicago’s Top Dog Breed. The winner Goes To…

It's A Dog's Life In ChicagoThere is no denying that Chicago is a dog’s town. From the many dog beaches/parks to the cool  specialized pet stores popping up in many communities. Of all the neighborhoods in this city Edgewater/Andersonville has got some of the most dog friendly people and businesses.

But who is the top dog of the 872 mixed/pure breeds in Chicago? According to fine reporting by DNA’s Tanveer Ali, it is the Labrador Retriever taking in 9% of the  38,525 Dog licenses last year. Pit bulls came in second with 5.5%, and German Shepherds rounding out the top three. Most mixed breed dogs were reported as being a poodle mix, such as Goldendoodles, cockapoos and Labradoodles.

It is reported however, that 610,000 dogs reside in the city, a far larger number than the small fraction that are registered. Also North siders tend to be Labrador owners and South/West siders Pit Bull owners (though it should be said that in Northern Chicago communities dog registration seems to be much higher). The Humane Society confirms that Pit Bull numbers are on the rise at their shelters. These type of “guard” dogs used to be dominated by German Shepherds and Dobermans in the 80s and Rottweilers in the 90s at these same shelters.

All in all, Andersonville/Edgewater is any breed’s dream community to be in. If you are looking for a dog to adopt, see Gloria at Famous Fido Rescue – famousfidorescue.com . They are located right in the heart of Andersonville and need good homes for amazing dogs. If you are not looking to adopt consider a donation to their organization.
