Edgewater neighbors angered man’s killing labeled self-defense

Authorities dropped their investigation into the slaying of a man in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood, calling it self-defense, but an activist who has dug deeply into the case wants it reopened.

Killian Walsh, president of the Edgewater Beach Neighbors Association, remembers the balmy September evening last year when Rocco Lopez was stabbed in the neck. She recalls the sirens and the memorials left where the young father of three fell on West Berwyn Avenue.

Haunted by the details and the way the investigation seemed to fade, she and her neighbors pored over police files, talked to witnesses and pursued leads.

What they discovered, they say, has convinced them that the man who killed Lopez and stabbed Lopez’s friend, Mario Flores, 19, should not be walking their streets. They said they plan to launch an online petition to draw attention to what happened and have asked prosecutors to reconsider the decision not to pursue charges.
