CHA Restoring Seniors’ Buildings

From Alderman Smith’s Office:
After years of sitting vacant, the CHA will soon begin to renovate and restore two seniors’ buildings, the Kenmore at 5040 N. Kenmore and the Pomeroy at 1138 Hollywood. The buildings were closed in 2004 and 2006 respectively because of their deteriorating physical condition. Funding issues prevented the rehab work from beginning sooner.

This project will restore 256 units of critically-needed senior housing to the community. Currently, there are no vacancies at any of the low-income seniors’ buildings in the Ward, and most buildings have at least a two-
year waiting list.

Work on the Kenmore will be completed in March, 2011 and on the Pomeroy in October, 2011. Tenants who were displaced from the buildings will have first priority on the refurbished apartments.

A special acknowledgement is due to Jane Addams Senior Caucus and to U. S. Representative Jan Schakowsky whose strong advocacy and leadership were critical in moving these projects forward.
