A 2-alarm fire in a four story apartment building on the 1000 block of  W. Catalpa broke out at 7:50 a.m. Sunday morning. The blaze left 3 people injured including one critically.

Witnesses said they heard screaming from the back of the building shortly before 8 a.m. There they could see flames shooting from a third floor apartment and people hanging out the upper floors throwing belongings into the parking lot.

Firefighters responded quickly and started extracting several people via ladder from the rear of the building. At around 8:15 a.m. two additional firetrucks were ordered to respond as people were said to be still trapped on the fourth floor.

The blaze was officially extinguished at 8:41 a.m. Search and rescue was complete and negative at 9:17 a.m.

District Chief Jeffrey Horan with the Chicago Fire Department said the building did have working smoke detectors and the fire is not considered suspicious.

There have been no updates on the fire victims status. No fire fighters were reported injured.
