Brixton Brings It!

Small Bites & Hand Crafted drinks

The Brixton at 5420 N Clark Street is one of newest restaurant-bars in Edgewater. The friendly, relaxed cocktail lounge is a welcome addition to the popular Andersonville neighborhood. On Saturday, December 22 a group of six of us visited for a little pre-holiday get together. The entire staff from Erica the friendly hostess and Ted our server to Tim the manager were genuine in their effort to offer a great and enjoyable experience.

The Brixton offers two floors of warm and pleasant spaces to enjoy their craft beverages and delicious small plates and entrees. The first floor has a large bar, several small tables and plenty of booths which make it fine for an intimate date or a fun group of friends. The brick walls and warm woods make the first floor space a comfortable place to unwind and loosen up. The second floor features a bar and pool table and several areas with sofas and large stuffed chairs for an even more laid back experience. It made me think of being in the living room, complete with a fire place, of a very hip grand-mother who served unique draft and bottled beers and distinctive cocktails.

The night we were there we had a choice of over 30 beers and eight original signature drinks. This was in addition to a whole selection of fine, wines spirits and whiskeys. Over the course of our night we sampled a number of the great drinks from the drink menu including the overall group favorite the “Mule Skinner Blue” The Mule Skinner Blue is a combination of rich Goslings dark rum, huckleberries and other spices. It’s a rich and fruity combination that you’ll need to try one when you stop in. The “Spanish Harlem” was a smoky combination of Mezcal, Chartreuse and lime. If you like your drinks savory and serious this one would make you happy. The “Sid Malicious” a combination of Malört, gin, egg white and nutmeg rounded out the drinks. This frothy concoction is a Chicago original. For the less advantageous, the Kettle One dirty martini was perfect.

When it comes to good food The Brixton offers a excellent variety of foods including small Bar Bites, and large and small plates. We tried two orders of the Bar Bite Squash. The kitchen happily accommodated our group by preparing one order without the bacon for the vegetarians in our group. Both the vegetarian and carnivore Bites were tasty and flavorful. We shared a few orders of the roasted peanuts and fries to go along with our drinks. The fries were perfectly seasoned and came with an aioli dipping sauce as well as a traditional tomato ketchup. I had an order of the Mussels which were done just right. The Mussels were tender and the broth was smooth and buttery which made it

perfect for soaking up with the grilled ciabatta. Next time I go I’ll need to go with a bigger appetite and try the Brixton Burger. I saw one get devoured by a guy at a nearby table and was wishing I could try one.

There are many good places to eat and drink in Edgewater and Andersonville, but I think the Brixton fills a needed niche. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the warm design and décor, the original drinks and well prepared food should make this a popular place to gather for some time to come.
