Bloomberg’s New Edgewater Campaign Office Vandalized

It has been a rough week for the Republican-turned-Democrat Mayor from New York City Mike Bloomberg in his bid to become the next US President. Personal attacks are on the rise against his character since the last Democratic debate and now his new Edgewater campaign office has been vandalized.

At about 1:11 a.m. this morning Chicago police received a call about derogatory words spray painted across the front of the property at 1130 W. Bryn Mawr, the home to one of Bloomberg’s new campaign offices. Police arrived to find the words ‘Racist,’ ‘sexist,’ ‘GOP,’ and ‘oligarch’ boldly drawn in orange on the windows.

Though no other damages to Bloomberg’s Illinois campaign offices have been reported at this time, other incidents have been reported in other cities. His campaign headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee was also tagged this weekend with similar words including ‘oligarch’ and ‘classist authoritarian.’ In mid-February two of his offices were vandalized in Ann Arbor and Flint Michigan with graffiti reading “Eat the rich” and “Corporate pig.”

Though the Bloomberg campaign has not released a statement at this time regarding the Edgewater incident, campaign manager Kevin Sheekey did speculate that the vandalism may be the work of Bernie Sanders supporters in the past saying, “We don’t know who is responsible for this vandalism, but we do know it echoes language from the Sanders campaign and its supporters.’

Bloomberg opened the Edgewater space on February 4. It was one of three Chicago spaces rented by Bloomberg to help energize his campaign. He also has a downtown office and another in the Chatham community at 712 E. 87th as well as locations in Springfield, Rockford and the Quad Cities.

Officially launching his campaign on Nov. 24 last year, he has been the target of sharp criticism for alleged inappropriate behavior towards women and his support of the controversial “stop and frisk” policy that targeted mostly people of color in NYC.

There is no one in custody at this time regarding the Edgewater incident.
