Are you ready for some football?
With Labor Day now behind us, and summer winding down, that means your Sundays (and Thursdays, and Mondays) will not be the same for the next four months if you’re a pro football fan. The NFL season kicks off this week on Wednesday evening as the New York Giants host the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium. Whether you’re a native Chicagoan rooting for Da Bears, or a transplant like myself (Go Lions!), looking to watch the action somewhere other than your couch, there are plenty of options to get your football fix in and around the neighborhood. We’ve listed the bars below that to the best of our knowledge will feature the NFL Sunday Ticket so you can catch any game to your liking.
Burke’s Public House (5401 N Broadway) – this will be Burke’s second NFL season since opening in 2011, and on your typical Sunday you’ll find the front of the house drawing a predominantly Bears crowd, while the back of the house draws in fans from all across the NFL requesting their game be played on one of the many flat screens throughout. Burke’s serves up brunch in addition to their great “bar food” menu and features $3 domestic bottles.
Double Bubble (6036 N Broadway) – a true no frills “dive” bar, the Double Bubble features a plethora of televisions and cheap pitchers of beer. They don’t serve food, but you’re welcome to order a pizza in from neighboring delivery joints.
Fireside (5739 N Ravenswood) – a great neighborhood spot nestled off the beaten path on Ravenswood just east of the Metra tracks. Fireside features a 250 (yes, 250) item bloody mary bar, nearly 100 beers and great comfort food.
Hamilton’s Bar and Grill (6341 N Broadway) – a local favorite of Loyola students, Hamilton’s features plenty of TV’s, a spacious layout and typical pub grub. Service is decent, and the prices are easy on the wallet. And where else can you order a drink called a “Mother F’er” and feel 21 again.
Mary’s Rec Room (5402 N Clark) – Andersonville’s lone sports bar, the Rec Room features all of the great burgers from Hamburger Mary’s and an expanded menu of bar bites, their own brews, and plenty of TV’s. Sunday’s feature $3 domestics and a mimosa brunch until 3PM – first mimosa is free with an entree and then each thereafter is only $2.
Norse Bar (6334 N Clark) - Norse Bar is one of the newest to the Edgewater bar scene and this will be their first full football season after opening in October last year. They feature probably the best selection of craft beers of any bar in the neighborhood, and on Sunday’s you can also check out the $5 mimosa bar offering traditional, grapefruit, mango, peach, and pineapple mimosas. If your team is taking a beating, take out some of your frustrations by playing your buds in a game of Tecmo Bowl on an old school Nintendo or any number of other fun games.
Pumping Company (6157 N Broadway) – another Loyola bar, you won’t find a ton of students here on Sunday afternoons – they’re likely studying or still sleeping. P-Co has college bar prices and plenty of televisions, but they need them due to the awkward layout of the space but you’ll get a fine view if you grab a seat near the TV you plan to watch. We recommend the wings and $5 bloody marys, but they also offer a huge brunch buffet (until 3PM) and $3 mimosas.
