Since being the first legal cannabis dispensary to open in Chicago four years ago, Dispensary33 at 5001 N. Clark in Andersonville has been the top seller of medical marijuana in the state according to a 2018 annual report put out by the Illinois Department of Health (IDPH). In addition they were voted best medical cannabis dispensary, best place to buy CBD products, and best smoke shop in the 2019 Reader Best Of Chicago awards. With all the success they have achieved in the last four years, the company has announced they are hoping to open a second Chicago location.

According to Dispensary33, they have already signed a letter of intent to open the new store at 1152 W. Randolph in Chicago’s West Loop area. The space will give the company about 5,000 sq. ft. of space that they hope will reduce congestion and wait times for customers. The proposed business will also include an indoor 4-car garage that will assure secure deliveries.

In a press release the company stated that they have already met with Alderman Burnett, West Loop community groups and the area’s Chamber of Commerce in order to address community concerns. Because the storefront is currently zoned C1, they added that a zoning change by the City Council is required as well as a special use approval by the Zoning Board of Appeals before they can begin selling cannabis product in the space.

“The owners of Dispensary33 live, work and raise children in the Andersonville/Uptown neighborhood, where our first location is, and we always want to be good neighbors who are welcomed by the community,” said Paul Lee, an owner and general manager of Dispensary33. “As a locally-owned, Chicago store, we think the west loop is a quintessentially Chicago neighborhood that will be a great cultural fit.”

West Loop is a highly sought after area by cannabis dispensary companies. Two other businesses, NuMed Chicago and Natural Care Company, are also seeking approval to begin selling legal marijuana in that community.
