Andersonville Attacked By Zombies!

zombiecrawlDon’t be surprised if you see a ton of zombies rolling through the bars of Andersonville on Saturday, May 10. Contrary to what it looks like, it will not be the end of the world or an apocalyptic takeover. In fact, the zombies making their way through Andersonville will be drinking and dragging from bar to bar to raise money for a local nonprofit. This year will mark the 7th annual Andersonville Zombie Pub Crawl a fundraiser for Chicago Comedy Theatre pH Productions. Staying true to Zombie form and fashion, the pub crawl has gotten creatively creepier and grown exponentially each year. This Zombie Pub Crawl is Andersonville-based. It is the neighborhood’s biggest annual fundraising event, attracting zombie enthusiasts, comedy fans, theater supporters, pub-crawl regulars, performers, and local neighbors. It began in 2002 with about 100 zombies, and has steadily grown to over 700 zombies in and along Clark’s local bars.

pH Productions began in 2002. They have always had a strong presence in Andersonville,  where the Zombie pub crawl began. They knew they wanted our community as their home, and that dream came true when they opened the doors to their very own theater in October of 2012. Having their own space has allowed them to flourish and offer multiple performances and classes, and grow their comedic community. pH Productions is different from other theater and comedy groups because they are all-inclusive when it comes to comedy and humor. Other companies focus only on improv, or only musicals, or some specific form of comedy or artistic discipline. This company does it all when it comes to laughter. They do sketch, improv, musicals, and so much more. “If it makes you laugh, we do it on this stage. We do it all because we believe in including of all forms of comedy,” says Executive Director Brett Mannes.

The event begins at 2 p.m. and goes until the Zombies have taken over the neighborhood. Registration is $25 before April 16, and $30 thereafter. The registration cost covers a Chicago Zombie Pub Crawl cup, t-shirt, CZPC drink specials, and discounts on zombie make-up at Fantasy Costumes, among a few other fun surprises. Get out your fake blood, creepy-colored contacts, ripped clothes, smoked out wig, and prepare for the event! Check in at the theater where groups will be deployed every 20 minutes. Each group will hit all the participating bars, but has a different drinking route to follow. Zombies rage about how fun it is to hang out with fellow zombies in an open and loving community. Everyone ends up mingling with other groups and hanging out with different zombies, all for a good cause. Because there are so many experienced zombie enthusiasts, the groups, themes, makeup and costumes become better and better every year.

Highlights from previous years include:

  • Zombie inspired decor at Simon’s for ultra haunting vibe
  • Super hero zombie staff at Sofo Bar & Tap
  • Alice in Wonderland Zombie crew
  • Thriller flash mob performed at Mary’s Attic

Local sponsor bars participating in the event are Hamburger Mary’s, Simon’s Tavern, @tmosphere, The Sofo Tap, Farraguts, The Call, The Brixton. Other business sponsors are Pabst Blue Ribbon, Great Lakes Brewing Company, Chicago Costume, Ranalli’s, Konak and Uber.

Don’t forget to go and see one of the many hilarious performances put on by pH Productions. Shows vary and go on throughout the week, with a variety of reasons to laugh. Find the schedule here. Look out for a few new shows coming up toward the end of May: Same Sex, Different Gays 2 – a musical sketch show about LGBT Life. Also coming soon is Flux Capaciter – A Very McFly musical.
