Where did well-known bar and restaurant owner Michelle Fire get her club’s name from? Years ago, Michelle took a memorable trip to India. Locals could not pronounce her first name, so they just called her ‘big chick.’ She took that name and made it her own, eventually giving her bar the same name. Over 30 years have past now and even though Michelle may have lost many ‘big chick’ pounds, her bar keeps gaining popularity and accolades.

Not only did Big Chicks beat out the larger gay and lesbian Chicago clubs in the Reader’s ‘best of Chicago’ awards earlier this summer, now it has been awarded and even greater prize, being inducted into the LGBT Hall of Fame.

Edgewater resident Michelle Fire has long championed the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered communities. Since opening the bar, it has helped anchor the the LGBT community in the area. Both Big Chicks and Tweet restaurant next door, continue to pack them in, allowing a safe space through the years for people to be themselves.

Big Chicks along with the non-profit organization Amigas Latinas, will both be inducted in the ‘organization’ category at this year’s LGBT Hall of Fame event on Wednesday, Nov. 9, from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St.

The LGBT Hall of Fame was founded in 1991 to help recognize the volunteer and professional achievements of LGBT people, their organizations, and their friends, as well as their contributions to the LGBT communities and to the City of Chicago. According to the group’s website, “Induction into the Hall of Fame symbolizes that the recipient either has made a contribution with far-reaching effects on the quality of life for Chicago’s lesbian and gay community or the city of Chicago, or has made a significant long-term contribution to the well-being of Chicago’s LGBT communities.”

Though located just outside the Edgewater border, Big Chicks at 5024 N. Sheridan Rd. is still located within the 48th Ward. Congratulations to Michelle and her staff.
