Largest Fair Trade Holiday Pop-Up Shop In U.S. Opens In Andersonville

What is being billed as the largest fair trade holiday pop-up shop in the U.S. has opened in the old Ann Sather restaurant space at 5207 N. Clark in Andersonville.

The shop, which is run by Chicago Fair Trade, also states that it is the only one of its kind in country. It will be the fifth year for the event and it will run through December 29, 2018. The store will feature gifts from over 30 locally owned fair-trade businesses and include diverse selections including clothing,  jewelry, home goods, toys, fine art, and edible goodies.

The store plans to hold ‘meet the maker’ events each Wednesday where shoppers can hear from participating local sellers about the impact of your purchases from fair trade business members, entrepreneurs and leaders. Speakers include Theresa VanderMeer of Work + Shelter on Dec. 5, Laura McMahon of Susu Accessories on Dec. 12, and Erika Poulos of Sandpiper Imports on Dec. 19. There will also be a Palestinian fair trade olive oil tasting on Dec. 7 and complimentary fair trade truffles on Dec. 21.

Fair Trade Chicago is an organization that focuses its business on people, the planet, and profits. According to their website, more than $1 billion of the world’s population survive on less than $1 per day. Fair trade aims to combat this widespread poverty by providing opportunity for economically disadvantaged producers, cultivating transparent trade partnerships, ensuring safe working conditions and the rights of women and children, and focusing on environmental sustainability through all stages of production.

The pop-up shop will be open Tues. – Sat. 11 a.m.  to 7 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and they are closed on Mondays.  For more information go to chicagofairtrade.org
